The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Santo Domingo (formerly known as Hispaniola). It is the second largest nation in the Caribbean Region occupying two thirds of the Eastern Region of the Island with a total area of 48,442 square kilometers.
The Republic itself is bordered to the south by the Caribbean Sea and north by the Atlantic Ocean. To the east the Mona Channel (Canal de la Mona) separates the country from the island of Puerto Rico and the Republic of Haità lies to the west of the island.
